Why is stress management Important?

According to the American Institute of Health, up to 90% of all health problems are related to stress. In other words, our thoughts and emotions have a dynamic effect on our health and vitality. Research has shown that stress and emotions of all kinds are reflected in our heart rhythm pattern. This pattern, in turn, tells us much about how our body is functioning. Our mental and emotional health is equally important and deeply interconnected with our physical well-being. When your body is out of sync, it works, just not as well as it could. This means that your autonomic nervous system, hormonal system and immune system are not working in a synchronized manner, which manifests in a variety of symptoms.

How is our heart rhythm pattern related to stress?

Our heart rhythm pattern, referred to as Heart Rate Variability, also known as HRV is transmitted from the heart to the higher brain centers and influences the way the brain processes information. HRV stands out as the best way to measure our inner emotional states and stress from moment to moment. Feelings of frustration and anxiety cause the hearts rhythm to become more disordered and irregular, inhibiting the higher brain centers ability to function. This, in turn, causes a drain in energy levels, upsetting the healthy functioning of the autonomic nervous system, which affects the rest of the body. On the other hand, feelings of love and appreciation generate a smooth heart rhythm pattern, which promotes higher brain center functioning. These more ordered and coherent heart rhythms, reduce nervous system chaos, facilitate cortical function and improve balance in the overall nervous system.
